The function of a gas seal system is naturally the same as a liquid seal system. The function of a fluid seal system, remembering that a fluid can be a liquid or a gas, is to continuously supply clean fluid to each specified seal interface point at the required differential pressure, temperature, and flow rate.
If the impression is made purely as a relief resulting from the greater pressure on the paper where the high parts of the matrix touch, the seal is known as a dry seal. In other cases ink or another liquid or liquefied medium is used, in another color than the paper.
A dry gas seal creates a film of gas (3) between a rotating seat (1) and a stationary face (2). This film of gas (or gap) between the seal faces must be generated and maintained at 150 to 200 micro-inches so the seal faces do not touch and the smallest amount of gas is allowed to leak through the seal.
From the flow meter the seal gas then flows into the gas seal housing. The differential pressure will be greater between the seal gas and the leakage gas than between the seal gas and the reference gas. The seal gas flows into the compressor because the seal gas is at a higher pressure than the reference gas pressure!
