Your Notice Number is a unique 13-digit number associated with the current amount you owe. Please refer to your notice for the Notice Number.
A CP2501 notice means that you need to contact the IRS because they've received information not reported on your tax return. You'll need to: Carefully read your notice. Complete and return the notice response form (regardless if the information is right or wrong)
In the case of a Notice of Deficiency, formerly known as CP3219A, it means that the information you provided with a tax return does not match up with the information a third party sent, like a bank for an employer.
It's usually a CP2000 notice, also called an under reporter inquiry. This notice basically proposes taxes, and possibly penalties, you might owe for missing income on your return. You or your tax pro will need to investigate the issue more and get back to the IRS within a certain amount of time.
If the IRS disagrees with your CP2000 response, the IRS usually sends a Statutory Notice of Deficiency (90-day letter). After you get that letter, you can't request an Appeals conference. You'll have 90 days to petition the U.S. Tax Court. After the 90-day letter, you'll get a final bill from the IRS.
A discrepancy adjustment is an adjustment to an income tax return to correct a discrepancy between facts developed during an EP Compliance Activity (such as the examination of an employer's pension plan) and line items on a related income tax return (such as a 1040 or 1120).
When checking on the status of your refund at the IRS Where's My Refund (WAR) site, you may get the message: We cannot provide any information about your refund. You can quickly find out if you did by checking your status. If you don't see a status, go through the TurboT ax File section again.
If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgment that the return was accepted, it is probably a matter of a day or two, and you should see your refund status updated or at least as in process. If you still cannot get a status update within the next 12 weeks, then there was obviously an issue with your return.
