How does a holding contact work?
They “hold” closed (or open) mechanically after a pulse of voltage energizes the coil. The contacts are closed by sending a pulse of current through the coil, and the contacts remain closed until the current flowing through them is interrupted.
What is the difference between a wet and dry contact?
Dry contacts are isolated from a voltage source. This is also common slang in communications where conductors with no carrier power would be referred to as a “dry pair.” Wet contacts have voltage applied to one of the poles and the operation of the contact causes voltage to be applied to rest of the circuit.
What does a dry contact mean?
Dry contact. No current: A dry contact is the synonym of volt free — it is not “wetted” by a voltage source. Dry contact can refer to a secondary set of contacts of a relay circuit which does not make or break the primary current being controlled by the relay.
Why is it called a dry contact?
A dry contact, also called a volt-free contact, is a relay contact that does not supply voltage. The relay energizes or de-energizes when a change to its input has occurred. In other words, a dry contact simply detects whether an input switch is open or closed.
What is a wet contact vs a dry contact?
Dry contacts are isolated from a voltage source. This is also common slang in communications where conductors with no carrier power would be referred to as a “dry pair.” Wet contacts have voltage applied to one of the poles and the operation of the contact causes voltage to be applied to rest of the circuit.
What is a dry contact input and output?
A dry contact or digital input is a set of switch contacts that have no other circuit or voltage wired to them. We supply 5vdc to the inputs. On open circuit there is no current. On closed circuit, there is up to 10ma of current. Furthermore, each dry contact or digital input can be programmed on an individual basis.
How does a dry contact sensor work?
Dry contact sensors are user definable and can be used to detect many inputs such as UPS status, security systems, air conditioning status. These general purpose switches can be either input or output. The input pins work by sensing the presence of a voltage level on an input pin.
How does a wet contact relay work?
A wet contact output on a device like a relay means that when the relay is activated, the relay output contacts supply a voltage to whatever device is connected to the relay output contacts, say for example a light or motor.
