Agricultural Subsidies. The federal government spends more than $20 billion a year on subsidies for farm businesses. About 39 percent of the nation's 2.1 million farms receive subsidies, with the lion's share of the handouts going to the largest producers of corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and rice.
Since 2008, however, the top 10 farm subsidy recipients each received an average of $18.2 million that's $1.8 million annually, $150,000 per month, or $35,000 a week. With the median household income of $60,000 a year, these farmers received more than 30 times the average yearly income of U.S. families.

Farmers got more than $22 billion in government payments in 2019. In 2019, the federal government delivered an extraordinary financial aid package to America's farmers. Farm subsidies jumped to their highest level in 14 years, most of them paid out without any action by Congress.
Price loss coverage. Eligible producers can receive compensation when the market price for their commodities falls below a reference price set by Congress. Agricultural risk coverage. Dairy margin protection program. Disaster assistance. Conservation reserve program.
The largest 10% of farms get about $85 per acre in assistance. Those at the median get $56 per acre.
In order to qualify for subsidies, you must also meet certain income eligibility requirements. According to the FSA, individuals that make more than $500,000 for commodity programs, $750,000 for average farms and $1 million for all income -- which includes both farm and non-farm income -- are not eligible for payments.
Direct Subsidies Instead, the farmer must sell his crop at a price determined by the commodity markets. Your land might qualify for a subsidy if you're growing wheat, oats, dry peas, soybeans, sorghum, cotton, corn, rice, peanuts or oil seeds, such as sunflower seeds.
