Never break up a one-syllable word. Never hyphenate a word that already has a hyphen. Never split a proper noun (any noun starting with a capital letter). Never leave one or two letters on either line. Never put the first or last letter of a word at the end or beginning of a line.
The general rules of word division. The hyphen goes at the end of the first line, with the first letter of the rest of the word starting the next line. Do not divide one-syllable words. Do not divide proper nouns.
Using hyphens to break lines Place the hyphen between the syllables, or sounds, of a word. (If you're not sure where the syllable breaks are in a word, check the dictionary.) Don't leave only one letter of a divided word on a line. If you have a choice, divide the word more or less in the middle.

Open a Word document that you want to format into columns. Click the “Page Layout” tab. Click “Columns” in the “Page Setup” group. Select “Two.” Click “Columns” again, then “More Columns” to customize the columns further. Click the “Microsoft Office Button” or “File” tab.
Select the cell or cells whose contents you want to split. On the Data tab, in the Data Tools group, click Text to Columns. Choose Delimited if it is not already selected, and then click Next.
Select the cells you want to split into two cells. On the Data tab, click the Text to Columns option. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard, if you want to split the text in the cells based on a comma, space, or other characters, select the Delimited option.
By syllable: Divide the word by syllables or units of sound. By structure: Divide the word into the smaller units of meaning from which the word is constructed. By meaning: Decide how each part of the divided word is best understood in order that the word is easily recognized from the two parts.
