Faced with the daunting task of filling in the complete IRS 990 (due to the dissolution of a 501c7 non-profit corporation of which I was the treasurer) I have found that the PDFfiller program is a real godsend -- so much so that I almost regret not having an excuse to continue as a subscriber once the trial-period expires. But I will highly recommend the program to anyone I might know who regularly is faced with filing long or complicated tax forms.

1201. Here is the breakdown: A legal identification must be run once per hour of broadcasting. The traditional rule, is that the ID must be run as close to the top of the hour as possible in a natural break in the programming.
Station identification (dent, network ID or channel ID) is the practice of radio or television stations or networks identifying themselves on-air, typically by means of a call sign or brand name (sometimes known, particularly in the United States, as a “sounder” or “stinger”, more generally as a station or network ID) ...
Simply put, the legal ID is a station's legal call letters, followed by the city the station is licensed to. The only things permissible between the calls and the COL are the licensee's name, the frequency and the channel number. If a station is simulcast, you have to give the frequency in each station's ID.
' All radio stations have a four-letter identification code. ... The letters 'N' and 'A' were given to military stations, but 'K' and 'W' were assigned out for commercial use. Radio stations east of the Mississippi River had to start their stations with 'W', and stations west of the Mississippi with 'K'.
Channel Identity: That which makes the channel recognizable to audiences and different from any other channel. Presenters, stars, program genres and specific programs all help to contribute to a channel's identity.
All radio stations have a four-letter identification code. ... The letters 'N' and 'A' were given to military stations, but 'K' and 'W' were assigned out for commercial use. Radio stations east of the Mississippi River had to start their stations with 'W', and stations west of the Mississippi with 'K'.
West of the Mississippi, all radio stations have call signs beginning with K. East of the river, all call signs start with W [5]. ... In 1912, the U.S. federal government started licensing terrestrial radio stations, assigning the call letters W and K to stations in the east, respectively the west of the country.
In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letter sand historically as a call signaler abbreviated as a call) is a unique designation for a transmitter station. In the United States of America, they are used for all FCC-licensed transmitters.
The reason that radio and television station call letters begin with either a K or a W is because those are among the prefixes assigned to the US under international law. (Others include N and AAA, but these are not used for broadcasting).
You use call signs. They're especially important for two-way communication, but commercial broadcast stations are still assigned them by the FCC and are required to announce them at the top of each hour. This is the only good explanation of the “weird” station names.
