What constitutes an error? If you realize that you've made a mistake when completing your title, STOP. DO NOT CROSS OUT, WRITE OVER or USE WHITE OUT. Remember, this is an important document which may not be accepted with those types of errors.
Using white-out or making an erasure on a certificate of title when transferring ownership automatically voids the certificate. If this occurs, a duplicate title must be obtained by the current owner and the incorrect title should be enclosed with your request.

Print and sign his/her name as the seller as well as his/her address on the title. Complete the odometer disclosure accurately on the title. Print the date of sale on the title. Print the sales price of the vehicle on the title.
If your state requires a notarized signature on your vehicle title, do not sign the document until you are in the presence of a notary. Only use black or blue ink to sign your title. Don't white-out or cross off any items. This may void your title, meaning you have to obtain a duplicate copy.
Take the title to your local department of motor vehicles. Explain what is happening, that one party is to be removed from the title, and present the properly signed document to them. If possible, you may want to wait to do step three at the DMV to make sure you fill the title out correctly.
You not need both parties to be physically present at the time of notarization, but you can only notarize for the person who is appearing before you. The other person can have their signature notarized at another time.
The state of Ohio requires that both buyer and seller sign in front of the notary, or at least inform the notary in person that they did sign the document. In North Carolina, only the signature of the seller must be notarized.
The buyer does not need to be present for the seller to complete the Assignment section; but the seller must have the name and address of the buyer in order to complete the section and have their signature notarized. No blank spaces!! All Sellers/signers must personally appear before the notary! NO exceptions!
Do all parties have to be present at the same place and time for a document to be notarized? Usually not, but it is best to ask your selected notary regarding the proper procedures in your state.
