License plate numbers are usually assigned in ascending order, beginning with a starting point such as AAA-001. Thus, an observer familiar with the sequence can determine roughly when the plate was issued. In a few cases, numbers have been assigned in descending order.
Normal vehicles have number plates starting with the letter B, followed by three digits, followed by three letters. The digits and letters are assigned by a registrar.
What do the letters on a license plate mean? ... The first section of a number plate is the local memory tag — the first two letters of the plate — which identifies where the vehicle was registered. The first letter stands for the local area, for example E denotes Essex, while L stands for London.
Plates used to have 6 numbers, but since 2013 new plates for new vehicles have 2 letters and 4 numbers. The 2 letters go before the numbers. They have a sticker on one of the corners indicating in which month of the year the plate was issued. On the bottom center of the plate is the year when the plate was issued.
A license plate. D-reg. Every individual car manufactured has a unique manufacturer reg[station] code. Beyond the parts of the code that identify the marque and model, there is a “generation” letter: A for the first series, B, C, D, and so on. D-reg means the fourth generation of the Sierra.
The first two letters of your car number plate represent where it was registered. The first letter is for the region and second for the local DLA office i.e. Yorkshire and York. 2. The two numbers following this are an age identifier, changed every 6 months at the beginning of March and September.
The two numbers in the middle of your plate identify how old the car is. The DLA issues two lots of number plate combinations each year, on March 1 and September 1. All plates issued between March 1 and the end of August will use the same two numbers as the year they are registered.
Civilian Plates vs. Municipal Plates Look for license plates composed solely of numbers, with the word “official” at the bottom, or containing any odd designs. This rule doesn't apply in some states, which allow officers to use their civilian cars and plates.
We use 4 digits to get more combination of numbers. The first two letters indicate the state to which the vehicle is registered. The next two-digit numbers are the sequential number of a district. The third part is a 4-digit number unique to each plate.
Low Number License Plates. The Department of Motor Vehicles issues numbers 1001 through 9999 (known as “low” registration numbers) for cars or trucks (weighing up to 6099 lbs registered at the “pleasure car” rate): ... There is no additional annual fee for the low registration number plates.
