Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
An MX-record (Mail eXchange-record) is a type of resource record in the Domain Name System (DNS). This is the system that, among other indicates to what specific IP address emails need to be sent. The MX-record contains the host name of the computer(s) that handle the emails for a domain and a prioritization code.
Mail exchanger record (MX Record)specifies an SMTP email server for the domain, used to route outgoing emails to an email server. Name Server records (NS Record)specifies that a DNS Zone, such as example.com is delegated to a specific Authoritative Name Server, and provides the address of the name server.
A Records are the most basic type of DNS record and are used to point a domain or subdomain to an IP address. Assigning a value to an A record is as simple as providing your DNS management panel with an IP address to where the domain or subdomain should point and a TTL.
As an example, an A Record is used to point a logical domain name, such as “google.com”, to the IP address of Google's hosting server, “74.125. 224.147”. These records point traffic from example.com (indicated by @) and ftp.example.com to the IP address 66.147.
So the mail server uses DNS to match the address on the 'envelope' to its destination, and deliver the email. Finally, DNS records can be used to publish an SPF (Sender Policy Framework) record to allow ESP's to send email on behalf of their clients.
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a directory used by SMTP to convert a name, such as renovations.com, to a list of servers that can receive connections for that name and to find the IP address of a specific server. DNS uses two kinds of records: Mail Exchanger (MX) records and A records.
Since the recipient is at another domain, SMTP needs to communicate with that domain. The SMTP server has a conversation with a Domain Name Server, or DNS (see How Web Servers Work for details).
Domain names serve to identify Internet resources, such as computers, networks, and services, with a text-based label that is easier to memorize than the numerical addresses used in the Internet protocols. A domain name may represent entire collections of such resources or individual instances.
