Only one permit is required. Even if you plan to spend every night of a Wilderness trip inside Yosemite, but your entry trailhead is outside Yosemite, you do not get the permit from Yosemite.
A permit is not required for day climbs, but is for all overnight bivouacs and costs $5. You can reserve your permit up to three months in advance to ensure your spot, or take a chance on the 33 percent of daily permits made available the day before they're valid.
Bear resistant food containers (“bear canisters”) are required for overnight hikers throughout the Wilderness (counterbalance food hangs are no longer legal). In Yosemite and the southern Sierra, bear canisters are the only effective and proven method of preventing bears from getting human food.
