if you follow much the same path that Nick suggested, but instead go to Settings > Display > Display Resolution it should show you the options for your screen resolution. As for your photos, take a picture, put it on your computer and check the resolution.

Click on Control Panel to display the Control Panel window. Click Adjust Screen Resolution under Appearance and Personalization. The Screen Resolution window appears. Click the Resolution drop-down and move the slider up to a higher resolution, which will make screen images smaller.
