For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
There is usually no need to reply to a notice unless specifically instructed to do so, or to make a payment. Taxpayers must respond to a notice they do not agree with. They should mail a letter explaining why they disagree to the address on the contact stub at the bottom of the notice.
Respond to the IRS. If you agree with the notice, send the CP2000 response form back to the IRS with payment (if applicable). If you can't pay the entire amount, you can request an installment agreement with your CP2000 response.
If the IRS disagrees with your CP2000 response, the IRS usually sends a Statutory Notice of Deficiency (90-day letter). After you get that letter, you can't request an Appeals conference. You'll have 90 days to petition the U.S. Tax Court. After the 90-day letter, you'll get a final bill from the IRS.
If you owe back taxes to the IRS, they may keep your refund. The CP2000 notice means that the income and/or payment information the IRS has on file for you doesn't match the information you reported in your return. ... If so, you can call at the number and speak with an IRS agent.
Taxpayers can get a status update on their CP2000 by calling the IRS (the number listed on the CP2000 notice). Taxpayers cannot look at their IRS account transcripts or their IRS online account and get the status or even see if the IRS received and is processing their response.
If you received a CP2000, it means that the IRS thinks the income and/or payment information they have on file doesn't match the information you reported on your tax return. This could affect your tax return; it may cause an increase or decrease in your tax, or it may not change it at all.
In fact, if you don't respond, respond late, or respond incompletely, the IRS will likely just disallow the items it's questioning on your return and send you a tax bill plus penalties and interest. Multiple responses confuse the IRS.
Ignoring an IRS audit notice can result in an assessment of additional tax, penalties, and interest. If you continue to ignore subsequent IRS notices, you may lose your right to dispute the case in Tax Court, and the IRS can begin trying to collect the tax.
The IRS and its authorized private collection agencies do send letters by mail. Most of the time all the taxpayer needs to do is read the letter carefully and take the appropriate action. A notice may reference changes to a taxpayer's account, taxes owed, a payment request or a specific issue on a tax return.
The taxpayer should allow at least 30 days for the IRS to respond. Do remember that there is usually no need to call the IRS. If a taxpayer must contact the IRS by phone, they should use the number in the upper right-hand corner of the notice. The taxpayer should have a copy of the tax return and letter when calling.
