For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Void ratio is defined as the void volume to the solids volume existing in the soil. It is denoted by the term e. Here, the term V s is soil solids volume and V V is voids volume. Void ratio is closely related with porosity. Porosity n is defined as percent of void volume to the total volume.
If void ratio is high (loose soils) voids in a soil skeleton tend to minimize under loading - adjacent particles contract. The opposite situation, i.e. when void ratio is relatively small (dense soils), indicates that the volume of the soil is vulnerable to increase under loading - particles dilate.
The reason is that the fine-grained soil has got very very finely divided particle which has got some chemical repulsions taking place. These chemical replulsions will not allow the particles to come closer that make the void ratio of the fine grained soils to be on the higher side compared to coarse grained soils.
To calculate the void ratio we must first calculate the volume of solids. Then we can find the volume of voids by subtracting the volume of solids from the total volume.
In actual fine grained soil have more void ratio as compared to the coarse grained soil.
Calculation of Compacted Bulk Density of aggregate. Bulk density (M)= (G-T) / V Equation 3. Or. Void Content. Calculate the void content in the aggregate using the bulk density determined by either the rodding, jigging, or shoveling procedure, as follows: %Voids= 100[(SxW)-M]/ (SxW) Equation 6.
Porosity (n), on the other hand, is the ratio of the volume of voids (Vv) to the total volume (V) or volume of the voids plus the volume of the solids (Vv+Vs). The void content formula or void ratio formula would be written as e=Vv÷Vs while the porosity formula would be written as n=Vv÷V.

Void volume is the volume of mobile phase (Vm or V0) in a column. For example, if the stationary phase occupies 40% of the total column volume, the void volume would be 60% of the total column volume. Consider a column that is 25 cm long with an inner diameter of 1 cm. The total column volume is 19.6 mL.
Void Volume (ml) = (d^2 *Pi * L * Pore Volume) / 4 ; *Column Diameter & Length are in cm. Always measure the actual void volumn of your specific HPLC column with a compound which is unretained by your column.
The void volume, V0, is in the range of roughly 40% or so of the bed volume. To determine the molecular size of a molecule, the gel filtration column is then calibrated with a set of standards of known molecular size. The volume taken to elute each molecule of the standard from the column is recorded.
Void Volume (ml) = (d^2 *Pi * L * Pore Volume) / 4 ; *Column Diameter & Length are in cm. Always measure the actual void volumn of your specific HPLC column with a compound which is unretained by your column.
The term column volume, typically abbreviated CV, is a value used to help determine separation quality and loading capacity. This volume includes both the interstitial volume (volume outside of the particles) and the media's own internal porosity (pore volume).
The dead volume can be measured by replacing the column with a zero dead-volume connector. By injecting a very small sample amount, the time can be measured between the moment of injection and the maximum peak height. This time multiplied by the flow rate gives you a very good estimation of the system dead volume.
Re: Column Volume Calculation "column volume" is a bit ambiguous. The bed volume (volume of resin in the column) is easy: V = 1/4 * (pi * dc^2 * L) where dc is the radius of the column (half the diameter) and L is the length. The "void volume" (Vm = the amount of mobile phase in the column) is a bit more complex.
