Music hello my name is Professor research, and today I would like to share our consanguinity chart with you this chart outlines the blood relation that family members have with a decedent understanding these relationships is key to identifying who you may need to locate in an estate matter let's take a look at our consanguinity chart each box has a generational title and a number representing degrees of relationship to begin reading the chart place the decedent in the blank box moving down from the decedent the lineal descendants are described by their generational title and degree of relationship moving up to the next column we see the level 1 heirs described by generational title and degree of relationship the chart continues up moving through level 2 level 3 and level 4 heirs many factors are involved in determining which level will be used for a specific estate matter each state has its own specific descent and distribution statutes and differ to which generational level or degree of consanguinity is required by law for locating living heirs for example in New York State a level 2 search is required up to the level of first cousins once removed Music now let's try this with a decedent we'll call him John Smith we place him in the blank box his lineal descendants can be determined by following the line directly below him to identify his children grandchildren and great-grandchildren as we move through each generation the degree of consanguinity or blood relationship is identified if John Smith has no living lineal descendants we will move up to the next level of the chart we call this a level one search as it begins with his parents who are one degree of consanguinity away from him by identifying the parents of the decedent we verify that we have the correct family unit and confirm the number of children within the family we will then move down the chart to identify his brothers and sisters nephews and nieces and if necessary his grand or great-grandnephews and nieces until we identify living heirs if John Smith has no siblings and no living level one heir we will continue to the next level of the chart we call this a level two search as it begins with his grandparents who are two degrees of consanguinity away from him, we continue down to identify his uncles and his first cousins note that the level to search could also include identifying the decedent's first cousins once removed first cousins twice removed or first cousins thrice removed when state law requires within a level to search or hire we will need to identify family members on both the decedent's paternal and maternal sides of the family the paternal relatives fall under the decedent's father side of the family which are the paternal aunts or uncles of the decedent lineages descending from these relatives will bring us to the decedent's paternal first cousins and so on respectively the maternal relatives are in relation to the decedent's mother's side of the family the higher we...
