Welcome to this presentation on British nationality my name is reg Basford, and I'll be introducing Finn gambled to you, and he'll be covering or fun all the ways in which you or your family might qualify for British nationality here's what you'll find out and this effectively represents our guarantee to you, you'll find out whether you have a valid claim to British nationality and to hold a passport or will show you a way in which you can find out the answers this brings me on to introducing Philip gamble to you, he is a former home office executive he worked in the Immigration and Nationality Directorate he is the founder and the managing partner of Philip gamble camp; Partners which was incorporated in 1992 Philip has over 24 years of experience in working in the field of British nationality law, and he is now widely regarded as one of the world's leading experts in that field before I hand over to Philip I just want to introduce you to the slide will use a set of lights akin to a set of traffic lights red will indicate a set of circumstances where you or your family have no claim to British nationality green will indicate that you have a standard route claim to nationality but most of you will find yourselves in this amber zone where you still unsure or unclear whether you have a claim or not we'll have a series of alerts and this is a set of circumstances which may well apply to you and a good time for you to concentrate this slide with a green box will show an interesting consequence of a British nationality law this slide here shows what we call a standard route to British nationality and there's really no complexity to your particular circumstances here the first is if you were born in the UK before 1983 the second is if you have a parent, and please note it could be a mother or father who was born in the UK before 1983 and finally if you were naturalized or spent a qualifying period of time in the UK in the past unfortunately there might be circumstances where we feel you have no claim at all to British nationality, and I'll quickly cover off on those situations as a general rule if you are third-generation that is you both your parents and all four grandparents were born in the same country however there are three exceptions the first is if your mother was previously married second if you are adopted and third if you were a parent worked in federal Rhodesia in the past this slide here shows situations where you might have a claim to nationality and this is where most of our clients fit in the first criteria is where your country of birth is different to any one of your two parents or your four grandparents, or you have a UK born grandparent or a parent or grandparent was British where you were married to a British national or your parent was married to a British national or if you or a parent had spent some qualifying period in the UK, so this brings me on to introducing Philip gamble to you, and he'll talk about the main principles of...
