If the C line and both test lines (1 and 2) are developed, the test indicates that the specimen contains anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2.
Reactive for HIV-1/2 antibodies: Three coloured lines appear, one in the control region “C” and one each in test regions “T1” and “T2”. Non-reactive for HIV-1 & HIV-2: One coloured line appears in the control region “C”. No coloured lines appear in either of the test regions “T1” or “T2”.
How is this test done? Rapid HIV testing is done with a sample of either blood or saliva. For a blood sample, a needle is used to draw blood from a vein in your arm or hand. For a saliva sample, your healthcare provider will rub a special swab against your gums.
Negative HIV-1 antibody but positive HIV-2 antibody results indicate the presence of HIV-2 infection. Together with a reactive initial HIV-1/-2 antigen and antibody screening test results, individuals with such results are presumed to have HIV-2 infection.
What do test results mean? Positive: means that you have HIV infection. Negative: means either you do not have HIV or you got it so recently that your body has not had time to make enough antibodies to be detected by the test. Indeterminate: means that the test did not show whether or not you have HIV.
3. If the C line and both test lines (1 and 2) are developed, the test indicates that the specimen contains anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2.
