Mueller EIS-3 (2-24-09) MOLLY HANGER ASSIST SYSTEM (MESAS) The MESAS concept has been selected as a follow-on award to STINGER and the MOMENTUM project. The primary goal of MESAS is the delivery of an unmanned, lightweight, and mobile launcher vehicle platform to support unmanned tactical reconnaissance and surveillance missions using either a handheld unmanned platform or a lightweight autonomous system with ground control station. Development of MESAS has been led by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL). A key part of MESAS is the integration into an unmanned vehicle of a large sensor suite for data-retrieval, tracking, and guidance of tactical unmanned surveillance platforms, such as MQ-9 or UAVs. MESAS will use a fully-integrated payload architecture employing various sensor, navigation, video, and data processing systems. Applications of MESAS will include the following: High Value Surveillance: Rapidly evaluate a wide range of threats for early warning, and provide a rapid response to counter the threat. Improvised Explosive Devices (Beds): Use low level, inexpensive hardware and software to detect Beds, and locate, track, identify, and neutralize explosive ordnance. Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Missions: Determine the location and disposition of Beds, locate the targets of enemy artillery using visual, digital, and infrared sensors combined with intelligence from human observers. Targeting and Navigation: Assess the potential threat posed by enemy mines, and help to develop the right munitions to support a precise strike in support of troops on the ground. Tactical Aerial Reconnaissance: Assist troops on the ground with the detection and dissemination of enemy information by using a vehicle equipped with a long-range GPS receiver. MESAS technology for airborne reconnaissance applications includes ground and airborne-level sensors, an integrated video camera, a video computer/processor, and a suite of integrated navigation and control systems.
