Controller–pilot data link communication (CPDLC) is a means of communication between controller and pilot, using data link for ATC communication. At the highest level, the concept is simple, with the emphasis on the continued involvement of the human at either end and the flexibility of use.
CPDLC allows direct exchange of standardized (pre-formatted) messages between a controller and a pilot, as an alternative to voice communications. In addition, it supports automation by using and processing the exchanged data by onboard and ground systems with error detection and reporting capabilities.
CPDLC allows both pilots and ATC to send a pre-determined set of messages to one another, similar to text messaging. These can include clearances, information, or requests. The goal is increased efficiency and understanding and decreased misinterpretation.
CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communication) is used to request departure clearances and communicate with ATC (Air Traffic Control) while en route. ADS-C (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Contract) automatically sends position reports to ATC via datalink (VHF, HF, or SATCOM).
CPDLC allows direct exchange of standardized (pre-formatted) messages between a controller and a pilot, as an alternative to voice communications. In addition, it supports automation by using and processing the exchanged data by onboard and ground systems with error detection and reporting capabilities.
They use VHF (Very High Frequency) and HF (High Frequency) radios to establish contact with air traffic control (ATC) facilities. Pilots transmit their aircraft's identification, position, altitude, and intentions to ATC, receiving instructions in return.
CPDLC can be used by itself, without ADS-C, and can be transmitted via VHF of SatCom with relatively low latency - basically the message gets where it need to go right away with practically un-noticeable delay.
Data capable Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) (AC 20-160), i.e. UA CVR/Flight Data Recorder (FDR) Systems limited to U.S. domestic CPDLC DCL do not require SATCOM capability. FANS 1/A+ data link operations in remote oceanic airspace are transmitted via SATCOM or VDL Mode 2 if within range.
