The woodwasp, Sirex noctilio, is native to Eurasia and North Africa (Hajek, Haavik, and Stephen, 2021*). Its associated fungus, Amylostereum areolatum, has numerous strains native to much of the Northern hemisphere including North America, Eurasia, and North Africa.
The male and female have a similar body shape, except the female is larger and has a long egg-laying apparatus (ovipositor) that can exceed her body length. The female can use her ovipositor only for egg laying; she can't use it to sting in defense. Although these pests can chew through wood, they don't bite people.
Why Should I Care? Native woodwasps only attack dead or dying trees, but sirex woodwasps will attack healthy trees. Populations of Washington's native pines and other conifers could suffer severe damage from an infestation of sirex woodwasps.
