The Grand Calumet at this point still flowed from west to east, emptying into the lake at Miller Beach. But by 1872, as more and more of the river's flow was captured by the Calumet River, its original mouth at Miller Beach had been completely blocked by sandbars, totally reversing the flow of the river.
In the 1960s, the Calumet River was so polluted that sludge worms could not survive, and in 1965 the O'Brien Lock and Dam began operating on the Calumet River at 130th Street to prevent polluted water from entering Lake Michigan.
Formerly a shallow, postglacial lake draining into Lake Michigan, it was transformed into an industrial harbor during the 20th century. Parts of the lake have been dredged, and other parts reshaped by landfill.
It is most popular for fishing Largemouth bass, Smallmouth bass, and Channel catfish.
The beach is open from 6 am to 11 pm, but swimming is only permitted during the beach season when lifeguards are on duty from 11 am to 7 pm, in designated swim areas. The beach season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day, through Labor Day.
