A GFR of 15 or lower may mean kidney failure.
In Stage 2 chronic kidney disease (CKD), your estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is between 60 and 89. This means your kidney function is mildly decreased. However, your kidneys are still able to filter your blood, which is why you may not notice any symptoms.
When looking at your eGFR results, a higher number is better. In general, an eGFR value lower than 60 is a sign that your kidneys may not be working properly. An eGFR lower than 15 is a marker of kidney failure. You may notice your eGFR number go up or down slightly between tests.
For example, in the healthy population described by van den Brand et al in the Netherlands, low normal eGFR value (defined as the 5th percentile) is 94 and 85 mL/min/1.73m2 at 25–29 years, 67 and 70 mL/min/1.73m2 at 50–54 years and 44 and 51 mL/min/1.73m2 at 70–74 years, for men and women respectively.
A GFR of 60 or higher is in the normal range. A GFR below 60 may mean kidney disease. A GFR of 15 or lower may mean kidney failure.
The average eGFR for someone in their 20s is about 116 mL/min/1.73m2. It drops to 85 mL/min/1.73m2 for people in their 60s. An eGFR higher than 60 means you have at least 60% kidney function. Generally, the higher the number, the better your kidney function.
Will Drinking Water Increase My GFR? Increasing your water intake likely won't affect your GFR in the long run. If your water intake is already at normal levels, drinking more won't slow your kidney disease. In fact, drinking too much water can be harmful.
