BWR units can operate in load-following mode more readily than PWRs. The steam passes through drier plates (steam separators) above the core and then directly to the turbines, which are thus part of the reactor circuit.
Boiling water reactors have a closed water-steam cycle. In the cooling water system, the coolant water flows through the reactor core, where the heat in the fuel elements, produced through nuclear fission, heats the water to around 286 degree Celsius so that it boils in the reactor pressure vessel.
The pressurized-water reactor is different from the boiling-water reactor because the pressurized-water reactor, the reactor core heats water and keeps it under pressure to prevent the water from turning into steam. This hot radioactive water flows through tubes in a steam generator.
The first experimental boiling water reactor (EBWR) was then built by ANL in 1956 near Chicago. The development of commercial BWRs was undertaken by General Electric (GE) and the prototype Vallecitos BWR was built in 1957 near San Jose, California.
A PWR generates steam indirectly: heat is transferred from the primary reactor coolant, which is kept liquid at high pressure, into a secondary circuit where steam is produced for the turbine. A BWR produces steam directly by boiling the water coolant.
BWRs can prevent the risk of fire and investment cost plus construction times are lower than a PWR, but these advantages do not come with disadvantages. The core of a BWR is less compact and is bigger than a PWR because it requires more control rods and uses four times more fuel elements.
