What are EPA's drinking water regulations for chromium? EPA has a drinking water standard of 0.1 milligrams per liter (mg/l) or 100 parts per billion (ppb) for total chromium. This includes all forms of chromium, including chromium-6.
Permissible exposure limit (PEL). The employer shall ensure that no employee is exposed to an airborne concentration of chromium (VI) in excess of 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air (5 µgm/m3), calculated as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA).
The final Cr(VI) rule establishes an 8-hour TWA permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 5 µg/m3 measured as Cr(VI). This means that over the course of any 8-hour work shift, the average exposure to Cr(VI) cannot exceed 5 µg/m3.
Periodic monitoring If the hexavalent chromium levels are at or above the PEL in the initial assessment, then monitoring must be done at least every three months. Periodic monitoring may cease if two consecutive personal air samples, taken at least seven days apart, indicate that results are below the action level.
There are no set limits on the amount of hexavalent chromium that can be found on surfaces. Wipe samples indicated levels of 0.05 µg/m3, a very low level detected.
As per Indian standard IS 10500 for drinking water, the maximum permissible contamination of Cr(VI) in drinking water is 50 µg/L. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends a still lower permissible concentration, i.e., 10 µg/L.
2.1 Dissolved hexavalent chromium, in the absence of interfering amounts of substances such as molybdenum, vanadium, and mercury, may be determined colorimetrically by reaction with diphenylcarbazide in acid solution. A red- violet color of unknown composition is produced.
Permissible exposure limit (PEL). The employer shall ensure that no employee is exposed to an airborne concentration of chromium (VI) in excess of 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air (5 µgm/m3), calculated as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA).
