Native seeds can be sown thickly (planted close together). Label with the name and sowing date. A good rule of thumb is to sow the seeds to the depth of the thickness of the seed and roughly 1/8 to ¼ inch apart. Seeds that are fine and dust-like are barely covered (if at all, see germination codes below).
Divide cool-season grasses in spring or early fall. These grasses can be transplanted at either time of the year but early spring is probably the best time to divide.
A sharp and sturdy knife is a good tool to have when dividing plants. I have a Hori Hori Knife* from Japan and find it very handy--I've had mine for several years, use it regularly, and it's still very sharp.
Division: Use your hands, a sharp knife, or two gardening forks to divide the plant into sections. Each section should have its own set of roots and healthy growth. Trim Roots and Foliage: Trim any damaged or excessively long roots, and prune back the foliage to reduce stress on the plant.
Plants should be divided when they're dormant, in late autumn or early spring. Fleshy-rooted perennials, such as paeonies, should be left until the end of their dormant season in late spring, before being divided.
California online seed and plant sellers: Everwilde Farms (Fallbrook) Larner Seeds (Bolinas) Jonsteen Company (trees only; McKinleyville) Stover Seed (Los Angeles) Moosa Creek Nursery (Valley Center) Theodore Payne Foundation (Sun Valley) Wildflower Seed Company (St. Helena)
Even after this month long process of establishment, each plant must be monitored and watered through the following summer, fall, winter and spring. Native plants are not established until the second summer. Remember, it takes a few years for those roots to fully develop.
