See site index. 4. Building history. — See photos of old building with new name. 5. Historic significance. — The building is a part of the historic Old Westerly area near the intersection of Main and Commercial Streets. The old Westerly Industrial District was established as the Westerly General Merchandise Company in 1885, and became the Westerly Corporation, as New Bedford became a city in 1883. As a city it was called New Bedford. The building is on the corner of the intersection where Westerly Street (which is now State Street) crosses New Bedford Street (now Main Street) just past the building's corner abutment. Westerly Motor Company is one of the last standing manufacturing companies in the city. Many of the buildings are still used in manufacturing, and in a very small number are still occupied as offices. The city also has a modern shopping center near the Old Westerly industrial district. The current owners of the building had previously offered to demolish the old building and build a large restaurant. The owners, however, did not accept the offer. In fact, the owners have decided to build a new building where the old building was located. After their meeting on March 30, 1999, the city council passed a resolution to allow the owner of the old building, John Pardon, to have the building demolished, and to re-purpose the building as a restaurant and entertainment facility. The resolution also provided for the re-naming of the street to Westerly Downtown. 6. Buildings or structures. — See photos. 7. Private property. — This property is private. 8.
