National Registry is a 2-year certification, whereas Virginia has 4-years (BLS) and 3-years ALS certifications. Therefore, it is important to manually recertify your Virginia certification after 2 years, in order to keep the CE report reflective of what is needed for NREMT.
When your certification lapses, the NREMT no longer recognizes you as a certified EMT or paramedic. This can have serious implications for your career, and you may only be allowed to practice once you renew your lapsed national certification.
The National Registry accepts State EMS Office accepted and CAPCE accredited education, education from EMS education programs, and U.S. accredited academic credit, college course or credit provided by the National Registry Alternative Recertification Credits Policy.
When your certification lapses, the NREMT no longer recognizes you as a certified EMT or paramedic. This can have serious implications for your career, and you may only be allowed to practice once you renew your lapsed national certification.
In order to renew an EMT certification prior to expiration, you must submit proof of either 24 hours of approved EMS continuing education (CE) or an approved 24 hour refresher course certificate taken within the past two years. A copy of the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) 8 ½ x 11” certificate issued as proof of passing the EMT basic exam. CA EMT certification will be issued to expire two (2) years from the date of passing the NREMT exam.
The NREMT requires that EMS providers complete their CE during the two year span in which they are certified. If all CE hours are completed by March 31, the EMS provider can submit their renewal application late and get their new certification without doing anything extra.
There is a $50 reinstatement fee in addition to the standard $20 recertification fee ($70 total).
