Established by the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) and governed by the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), the NOSB considers and makes recommendations on a wide range of issues involving the production, handling, and processing of organic products.
The material must be at least 95% organic, as certified by "recognized international or national standards". If the material is 70% organic, it can be labeled as "made with organic".
These standards require that products bearing the USDA organic label be grown and processed without the use of toxic and synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, genetic engineering, antibiotics, synthetic growth hormones, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, sewage sludge and irradiation.
The National Organic Program (NOP) is a USDA program. USDA determines all matters of policy concerning the eligibility of inert ingredients for use in the NOP. EPA's role is to assist USDA by assuring that USDA's policies are implemented with regard to organic claims made by registered pesticide products.
If you wish to claim that a food or beverage is “organic,” the product must be at least 95% certified organic. This means that all agricultural ingredients must be organic, except for certain ingredients on the National List.
