The Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) is a scoring system that ranges from 0 to 100. This score, which is based on certain guidelines, rates how well a donor kidney is expected to work compared to the kidneys that were transplanted in the previous year.
A “match” between a living kidney donor and a potential transplant recipient refers to the biological compatibility between the two people. Compatibility is determined by looking at blood type, tissue type, and crossmatching. The first step in kidney matching is matching blood type.
The new kidney allocation scheme (KAS) in effect since December 4th 2014 was designed to overcome the shortcomings of previous system. A key feature of the new KAS is preferential allocation of best quality organs to wait-list candidates with the longest predictive survival in a concept called longevity matching.
The score ranges from zero to 100. EPTS estimates how long each candidate may benefit if he or she gets a kidney transplant, when compared with all other people listed for a kidney transplant. A person with an EPTS score of 20 is likely to survive with a transplanted kidney longer than 80 percent of other candidates.
The system gives immune sensitized candidates more priority for kidneys they aren't likely to reject. People who have a slightly higher sensitivity get slightly more priority. People who are very highly sensitized (98 percent or above) will get much more priority.
There are some medical conditions that could prevent you from being a living donor, including having uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, or cancer. If you're a smoker, you will most likely be asked to quit before being approved to donate.
