On November 14th, 2008 Governor's Executive Vice President, Joseph P. McCrory, was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in recognition of his commitment to creating greater opportunities for every citizen through his leadership and policies as Governor of North Carolina. The Governor, in partnership with a team of federal, state and local agencies, are now transforming the State of North Carolina to create a more prosperous middle class, and reducing poverty. This Governor has made poverty eradication his key issue at the federal level as well as the state level. He has put public health, education and social services at the forefront of his agenda and has championed several initiatives to do just that. He launched the Community Action Fund, which supports organizations that are working to end poverty in the communities that they serve; and a new initiative, Child Wise, which will help parents and families, especially children, have a positive impact in their children's lives. The Governor is also spearheading the new initiative “Grow Your Jobs”, which will help businesses that are willing to develop sustainable, fair-paying jobs in North Carolina. Governor McCrory has also been a strong supporter of public broadcasting, and he is working and promoting state legislation to ensure that our public broadcasters can create jobs. In addition to these areas, Governor McCrory has made public higher education and workforce development a priority as he continues to expand opportunities for North Carolina's workers.
