The standard diagnostic PSG requires the monitoring, recording, and evaluation of sleep stages and arousals, respiration, limb movements, snoring, oximetry, body position, and cardiac rhythm. The resulting documentation is used to diagnose or assess the treatment of sleep disorders (1).
Home Sleep Study (Portable Monitoring) To Test for OSA A home sleep study is a simplified version of an overnight, attended sleep study that focuses on nocturnal breathing. Home sleep studies are only used to diagnose or rule out obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
How Do I Know I Have OSA? The gold standard for diagnosis is a Polysomnography (PSG), or, sleep study. This test is performed while the patient is asleep at a sleep laboratory, and monitors brain waves, blood oxygen levels, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements.
Founded in 1988 as a mutual-help support group for persons affected by sleep apnea, the A.W.A.K.E. Network is now composed of more than 300 groups in nearly all fifty states. A.W.A.K.E. meetings are held regularly and guest speakers are often invited to address the group.
The severity of OSA is determined by an index – Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) or Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI), if PSG is preformed, or Respiratory Event Index (REI) if OCST is performed. AHI or REI <5/hour = normal (for adults); 5–14.9/hour = mild OSA; 15–29.9/hour = moderate OSA; and ≥30/hour = severe OSA.
A common recommendation for a sleep study is to bathe or shower beforehand. However, you should avoid using creams, lotions, hair care products, etc., afterward. Clean skin without any additional products on it is best, so the sensors that are part of a sleep study can stay attached and get clear readings.
Medicare covers CPAP for the treatment of OSA if the beneficiary has an AHI or RDI ≥ 15 events/hour. Medicare also covers CPAP for the treatment of OSA if the beneficiary has a co-morbidity related to OSA and the AHI or RDI is ≥ 5.
