Gray leaf spot (GLS) is a common fungal disease in the United States caused by the pathogen Cercospora zeae-maydis in corn. Disease development is favored by warm temperatures, 80°F or 27 °C; and high humidity, relative humidity of 90% or higher for 12 hours or more.
Copper, mancozeb, and chlorothalonil (Daconil) are all contact fungicides, and can be very effective on their own or in addition to a systemic variety. When using contact fungicides, it's important to get the undersides of the leaves- easier said than done. They also wash off in the rain.
Avoid overhead irrigation whenever possible. When algal leaf spot is severe, copper fungicide sprays are recommended. Sprays may need to be applied every 2 weeks if wet conditions persist.
Azoxy (disease ex) is the most effective of the commonly available fungicides for leaf spot/melting, but make sure you don't do more than 2 consecutive apps. Rotate your fungicides or you you will breed resistance.
Ascernity® and Posterity® XT fungicides are among the most effective fungicides for gray leaf spot control. Because gray leaf spot can and will develop resistance to fungicides, tank mixtures with a multisite contact fungicide, such as Daconil Ultrex®, Daconil Weatherstik® or Daconil® Action™ fungicide, is recommended.
A one-year rotation away from corn, followed by tillage is recommended to prevent disease development in the subsequent corn crop. In no-till or reduced-till fields with a history of gray leaf spot, a two-year rotation out of corn may be needed to reduce the amount of disease in the following corn crop.
Treat gray leaf spots with a suitable fungicide. The main active ingredients effective for disease control are strobilurin, thiophanate methyl, chlorothalonil, azoxystrobin, and propiconazole. It's always better to hire professional lawn care services to do it.
In general, azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, or fluoxastrobin applications will control gray leaf spot for 28 days. The other three fungicides will control the disease for 14 days. Irrigate ing to label directions after application of granular products. RTS = A Ready-to-Spray, hose-end spray bottle.
