Bread Loaf began as a 300-acre farm and was transformed by Joseph Battell into a 30,000-acre wilderness. Regaining his health on that Ripton farm inspired Battell's 50-year passion to preserve the wild lands and lifestyle that had strengthened him and, he believed, would do the same for future generations.
The inaugural conference, inspired by Robert Frost and with the support of other Bread Loaf School of English Faculty, as well, including Willa Cather, Katherine Lee Bates, and Louis Untermeyer, took place in 1926. About. The New England Young Writers' Conference (NEYWC) at Bread Loaf is a four day writing-focused workshop for high school students in New England and from around the country. The long weekend is packed with writing seminars, workshops, readings, and opportunities to meet fellow young writers.
The Bread Loaf School of English, Middlebury's graduate school of English, was established at the college's Bread Loaf Mountain campus in 1920. The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference was established in 1926. In 1978, the Bread Loaf School of English expanded to include a campus at Lincoln College, Oxford University.
For the 2024 conference, we accepted 16% of paying participant applicants and 4% of those who applied for financial aid. Notification letters are sent via Submittable in late May.
