Spiritual direction is a type of spiritual coaching that has some differences from Christian counseling and discipleship. The emphasis of counseling is giving advice and solutions to issues you are dealing with. The purpose of discipleship is learning about the Scripture and the life you are called to as a Christian.
Spiritual formation is the process of transformation such that, in any given situation, the words and thoughts and actions that come out of us authentically are the words and thoughts and actions of Jesus that would come out of Christ were he in the same circumstance.
``Spiritual formation'' refers to the process of shaping our spirit and giving it a definite character. It means the formation of our spirit in conformity with the Spirit of Christ. Of course it involves the Holy Spirit in action, but the focus of spiritual formation is the formation of our spirit.
So, what are discipleship and spiritual formation? They are different terms for the same lifelong process of deepening our relationship with God in a way that transforms us. To deepen a relationship requires growing in understanding of ourselves, others, and of our interactions.
There are three basic stages of the spiritual life (holiness), called the Purgative, Illuminative, and Unitive Ways. One passes from the lowest (purgative) to the highest (unitive) along a spectrum.
Spiritual formation focuses on the deepening of one's relationship with God. Discipleship focuses on the maturing of one's faith in the context of the particular beliefs and values of a faith community. Disciplers are respected and spiritually mature mentors and leaders in a faith community.
Though spiritual formation and discipleship both involve a process of growth and change, spiritual formation is directed by the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life, whereas discipleship is the ongoing process by which the believer learns to live as a transformed individual.
