Derived from the Latin Liber Lēvīticus which is from the Ancient Greek το Λευιτικόν (to Leuitikón), "of the Levites [priestly class]". In Jewish writings it is customary to cite the book by its first word, וַיִּקְרָא (Vayikrá, “and he called”).
The overall message of Leviticus is sanctification. The book communicates that receiving God's forgiveness and acceptance should be followed by holy living and spiritual growth. Now that Israel had been redeemed by God, they were to be purified into a people worthy of their God.
The English name Leviticus comes from the Latin Leviticus, which is in turn from the Ancient Greek: Λευιτικόν (Leuitikon), referring to the priestly tribe of the Israelites, 'Levi'. The Greek expression is in turn a variant of the rabbinic Hebrew torat kohanim, 'law of priests', as many of its laws relate to priests.
However, Israel cannot enter his presence because of their corruption. In response, God introduces a set of sacrifices, the priesthood, and purity laws in the book of Leviticus. The book of Numbers tells the story of Israel's repeated rebellion in the wilderness and how it is met by God's justice and mercy.
The title “Leviticus” comes from the Latin Vulgate version of the Greek OT (LXX)1 Leuitikon meaning “matters of the Levites” (25:32, 33).
In Hebrew, the book of Leviticus is named for its opening word, “vayikra,” meaning “and he called.” Here God calls out to Moses, transmitting a set of instructions for what will be the sacrificial system of the Temple.
In Leviticus, holiness means being close to God and acting ing to God's will. It means maintaining purity and obeying religious laws.
Leviticus is about the people learning to live in a peaceful, restful community with one another and with Yahweh. Leviticus shows us God's desire to restore all people to live and thrive with him in peace.
