USA Climbing adult categories are 17+ for the 2024-2025 season. We may consider eligibility for competitors who are 16 years old for North American Cup Series events with the understanding that only those who are 17 years old or older would be World Cup eligible (TBD).
The three competition climbing disciplines are lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing. The result of multiple disciplines can be used in a "combined" format to determine an all-round winner (or the "combined" winner).
There are additional eligibility criteria that may award a competitor eligibility to the National Championship, including: being (or having been) a member of the US Olympic Team; highly ranked performance in the prior IFSC season; or being highly ranking in a Youth or Collegiate National Team Ranking.
45% of climbers are between 31 and 40 years old. 22% of climbers are between 41 and 50 years old. 17% of climbers are between 21 and 30 years old. 4% of climbers are between 61 and 70 years old.
The selection for most National Team members and the National Development Team uses a National Team Ranking – a points-based system where athletes receive points at the National Championship and the National Team Trials. Some athletes may also receive bonus points.
Climbing is suitable for all ages. We've had participants under 2, as well as those over 90. Some of our instructed sessions have age limits for young people — you can use the filters on our 'What can under-18s do at The Reach' page to see the options for different ages.
