What is Continental Math League (CML)? It is a national problem solving competition that requires your child to complete timed, written tests. There are six challenging word problems on each test. At the end of the competition, top scorers within our school will be recognized for their achievement with awards.
Target Round - Four pairs of problems are administered, and students have 6 minutes to complete each pair. Students may use any calculator allowed for use on the SAT. 10 points are awarded for each correct answer, with no penalty for skipped or incorrect answers.
Students are asked to solve 30-35 problems in 30 minutes. The last 10 problems are hard and require students to find advanced “tricks” without which the problems take too long to solve. To make an analogy from track and field, while most math contests are long-distance races, the Math League is a sprint!
Test Format The Sprint Round contains 30 questions of multiple choice (elementary and high school versions) or free response (middle school version), and calculators are not allowed. The Target Round contains four pairs of two questions that allow calculator use, and students work on and turn in one pair at a time.
Sprint Round: There are thirty multiple choice questions. You will be awarded 4 points for each question answered correctly, -1 for each incorrect answer, and no points for unanswered problems. No calculators are allowed on the Sprint Round.
TEAM ROUND: This is a ten question, twenty minute test which a team of up to six works on together. Each question will be worth ten points, and the top team round score from each school will contribute to that school's overall point total.
The Sprint Round contains 30 questions of multiple choice (elementary and high school versions) or free response (middle school version), and calculators are not allowed. The Target Round contains four pairs of two questions that allow calculator use, and students work on and turn in one pair at a time.
Because of the emphasis on accuracy, answers must be completely legible, exactly correct, entirely numerical, fully computed, and in simplest form (see below). If the form of an answer is specified in the problem, the answer must adhere to that form.
