An overload is when a student wishes to enroll in more than 19 credit hours in any semester. You might consider an overload if you are behind pace for meeting your degree requirements in 4 years or you wish to add a 4 credit hour internship, there are a variety of reasons why you might consider one.
You may continue to take classes for as long as you want but may not exceed the maximum allowed credits for any combination of sessions. Fall/Spring Semesters - 18 credits for any session combination. C session: 18 Credits maximum. A/B sessions: 9 credits maximum in each session.
A minimum full-time course load for an undergraduate student is 12 credit hours. The maximum course load for which a degree-seeking student may register in a fall or spring semester across all three sessions (A, B and C) is 18 credit hours, with a maximum of nine credit hours in each A or B session.
Enrollment in more than 18 credit hours in a Fall or Spring semester requires advance approval (via Academic Petition) of the dean of the student's major college. An undergraduate student enrolled in 12 or more credit hours is considered to be a full-time student and must pay full tuition and fees.
An overload is when a student requests to carry more than 19 credit hours a semester. Overloads that are between 19 and 23 credit hours require a student have at least a 3.0 GPA from the semester prior.
You must not attempt more than 150% of the total credit hours required for your degree program. For example, if your degree program requires 120 credit hours, 150% of 120 credit hours is 180 credit hours. Transfer credits and test credits, accepted by ASU, count towards the maximum credit hour standard.
You must submit a new petition each semester you wish to take an overload. Non-degree seeking undergraduates are not eligible for overloads except when necessary for ASU summer study abroad. Approval of an overload does not imply that the college will approve requests to late add a course.
