All individual bankrutpcy filers are required to complete pre-bankruptcy credit counseling and pre-discharge debtor education. These may not be provided at the same time. Credit counseling must take place before you file for bankruptcy; debtor education must take place after you file.
The bankruptcy laws require the course to be a minimum of two hours. Feel free to take as long as you need. However, you must spend a minimum of two hours in order to receive your certificate of completion. Q: Where can I take the course?
How long is the course? The pre-filing credit counseling course takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete. The post-filing debtor education course takes a minimum of 2 hours to complete (by law).
How long is the first bankruptcy course? The course is not timed. As long as you complete the course and chat with a credit counselor, you will be provided a certificate of completion.
Even places that offer the pre-filing class for free will charge for the post-filing debtor's education class. They're mostly online, and should contain a minimum of 2 hours of non-skippable content and things you answer.
