The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) is indeed tuition-free. As a matter of fact, students, or midshipman candidates, actually receive a small stipend during their time at NAPS. While you're at NAPS, you're an active-duty Sailor in the U.S. Navy; hence, you are paid ing to military scales.
Our Mission at NAPS is to prepare Midshipman and Cadet Candidates for success at the U.S. Naval and Coast Guard Academies by developing and enhancing moral, mental and physical foundations. Our student body consists of prior service Sailors and Marines as well as direct admission students right out of high school.
The selection process to get into NAPS is rigorous and highly competitive. The first step in the process is to apply to the U.S. Naval Academy where you'll need to complete an extensive application that includes an educator recommendation, a medical examination, and a fitness assessment.
The director selects both enlisted active duty and civilian applicants who have applied for admission to the Academy but were not selected for direct entry. Approximately 240 cadet candidates enter the prep school each summer. Between 75 and 80 percent of all entering students earn an appointment to the Academy.
