IPEDS data products currently have two calculations of FTE students, one using fall student headcounts and the other using 12- month instructional activity. The number of FTE students is calculated based on fall student headcounts as reported by the institution on the IPEDS Enrollment (EF) component (Part A).

The Monthly FTE total number is calculated by taking the total number of hours students are scheduled for that month, divided by the total number of hours considered “full time” for the month. If a student goes over the max for any given day, that student should only get the max number of hours.
Based on IPEDS definitions, a full-time undergraduate student is a student enrolled for 12 or more semester credits, or 12 or more quarter credits, or 24 or more clock hours a week each term, while a part-time undergraduate student is a student enrolled for either less than 12 semester or quarter credits, or less than

A college student is considered to be enrolled on a full-time basis for student financial aid purposes if they are enrolled for at least 12 credit hours per semester.
