I recently installed new hardware on my sailboat these hearken cam Magic cleats with the extreme fair lead on top teething I really liked about the fair leaned on top is that it allows you to pull the line in any direction under load it works perfect for where I want to mount these cleats on the boat quite often hardware like this is just installed by drilling the correct sized holes for the fasteners applying sealant and snugging them down but if your boats built with a core deck layers of fiberglass on the inside and outside with a core in the middle such as grain balsa their×39’s a few precautions you'll want to take when mounting hardware like this as always anything built with end grain balsa insusceptible to rot if moisture finds it sway to the core since our boats has the core deck we're going to install these cleats a little differently guaranteed waterproof method of mounting hardware is to drill the holes oversized first then fill the holes full of epoxy to saturate that balsa core once that×39’s done you simply read rill the mounting holes to the correct size and mount the hardware this approach accomplishes two things it protects that core from rotting in case the fasteners leak the epoxy also acts as a compression sleeve so if you accidentally over tighten the fasteners you won't crush the deck to get started locate the hardware I like to use masking tape to align things and to stick things down temporarily to make sure that hardware is in the right spot once the hardware is in the right spots one has to drill the holes to the same size of the fastener next we'll drill those holes out to larger diameter for that we use two steps drill bit a step drill a bit inexactly how it sounds it's a smaller diameter at the tip and then a larger diameter at the top the step drill a bit also has nice long cutting edges that way when you go to drill the hole out two×39’t chip the gel coat the drill bit also drills a slightly tapered hole which is perfect for the epoxy to set into I drilled all the holes out to about double the size of the diameter of the original once you have all the holes drilled it'time to fill them with epoxy we use atwo-part epoxy from west systems first×39’ll do a saturation coat and thence×39’ll thicken the epoxy for the finalfilltape off all the holes from the inside with masking tape then mix up your epoxy now fill all the holes with epoxy to the top of the deck let the epoxy sit in the hole for a few minutes then with the utility knife go down cut a hole in the tape and let that epoxy drain out apply anew piece of tape over the hole after×39’s done draining now we're going Todd filler to the epoxy to thicken it reuse silica in this case because it's one of the strongest fillers, but you can add two epoxy silica is extremely harmful for your lungs since it's so light it also tends to float around in the earthen you go to mix it in make sure adware a good mask when you mix the silica in with the epoxy now put the thickened...
