When you are accepted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, you are automatically considered for the LAS Honors program. We review all incoming students, making our selections based upon academic achievement as well as diversity of identity, geography, and major/area of study.
ELIGIBILTY REQUIREMENTS Maintain a 3.50 cumulative Illinois GPA. Maintain a 3.50 yearly Illinois GPA. Complete at least 12 graded hours on the Illinois campus each fall and spring semester. Complete an Honors Plan, and appropriate honors project, each fall and spring semester.
Incoming first-year students must be invited through admissions to participate in the first semester. Otherwise, students who have met the following requirements may self-nominate to be a James Scholar: Maintain a minimum UIUC GPA of 3.50. Complete at least one fall or spring semester of fulltime UIUC coursework.
To obtain certification for being a James Scholar student in your first year, you must: Attain a 3.50 UIUC GPA in the fall semester of your first year. Submit a Semester Plan each fall and spring semester through the James Scholar Portal until graduation.
The James Scholar Honors Program in the School of Information Sciences recognizes the talents of academically outstanding students, promotes curricular/co-curricular growth, and helps prepare students to stand out in their future endeavors. James Scholars may also receive: Priority registration for classes.

James Scholar is a big bonus if you are willing to maintain it because a lot of important classes are often out of slots and emailing your advisor usually ends in them saying your SOL and try again next semester. I personally feel I would have taken more classes I'm interested in if I had the James scholar buff.
