Ride-alongs are offered by many police departments around the world. There is a minimum age to participate in a ride-along. Depending on the department, it is often somewhere between the ages of 12 and 18. When participation of those under 18 is permitted, consent from a parent or legal guardian is required.
Most law enforcement departments use a rotating police schedule, which means they work a certain number of days in a row and then have a certain number of days off. This is known as a “rotating shift” or “rotating roster.” The length of these shifts can vary, but they are usually 8-12 hours long.

While you may request to ride with a specific Officer, the On-Duty Sergeant will determine which Officer you will ride with. Ride-Alongs typically last six (6) hours but may be extended with approval of the On-Duty Sergeant. Normally citizens may ride along no more than once every six months.
People go on ride-alongs for various reasons. These include interest in a future career in law enforcement, personal interest in law enforcement officers without such a career, journalists wishing to write reports, and those interested in community relations.
Some agencies won't do ride alongs. Some agencies limit their ride alongs to their cadets only. However, the majority of departments will open their ride along programs to all U.S. citizens (called Civilian Observers).
