Psychoanalysis and cognitive science share the notion that a mind, like a brain, operates on a dynamic basis; that it is neither static nor fluid; and that in order to understand human behavior and thought, an explicit understanding of how this dynamic interrelationship of mind and brain functions is necessary. However, the philosophical implications of this notion, as of much in psychology and sociology, are not well explored. This study explores the philosophical implications of this notion and suggests that, when approached carefully, it can provide a fruitful new perspective at the crossroads of the human condition and philosophy. In the first part of the study, the author analyzes the theoretical foundations of philosophical constructivism, the philosophy of mental representation, and phenomenology from the perspectives of philosophy of mind and philosophy of emotion, and considers how each contributes in a specific way to the overall conception of mental representation and emotional experience and how this, in turn, relates to the concept of mental representation and how they both come to be considered epistemological and ontological. The second part considers how these concepts relate to the process of mental representation and the central position of the observer in this process. In the third part the author discusses epistemological and ontological concerns in relation to the idea of mental representation and the role psychotherapeutics plays in developing psychological theory.
