Urological technology has been a slow and complex process even during the last few decades, as the main problem of robotic surgery was still to find a reliable surgical protocol. The need for a reliable human factor was apparent at the beginning of the last century, when robots entered our daily lives and were developed. In this Symposium, Dr. Giorgio Mini of TU Hanover, who has been working on the new Da Vinci, presents the new robotic platform at the end of his robotic-surgery career. The main objective of the study was to understand the feasibility of the four arm da Vinci in a live surgery context. As a human factor, the robot would have been used to take the patient's opinions, to guide the procedure and to record the results. After the successful completion of the first stage (1 hour of testing with the current-specification of the da Vinci), the next goal was to try to improve all aspects of the procedure with the use of the additional arm. The robotic platform was therefore first presented as a concept and then finally as a practical study. THE ROLE OF THE COMPETITOR — Dr. Vincenzo Mini, TU Hanover The Da Vinci robotic prosthesis is a high-rate surgical tool with an impressive success rate (91% in the last four years) and a highly complex surgery. The current version of the device (Robotic 1.0) can perform various different urological operations: arm surgery. It is capable of reaching the extremities and of performing surgery by the use of the upper arm. It should be added that not only can it perform surgery by the upper arm, the arm was also designed to take the patient's opinions. This means that a prosthesis with a higher precision requires a higher level of human integration. During all this time, several researchers in Switzerland had been working to improve the Da Vinci robotic prosthesis. They did so by means of several experimental techniques. We were interested in evaluating their ideas by means of a surgical protocol which was supposed to be performed by the Da Vinci robotic prosthesis during the course of a 1-hour surgical procedure. It was hypothesized that if the prosthesis could be successfully operated by a fully-qualified surgeon during a surgical procedure while taking into account the opinions of the patient and the patient's comfort, the prosthesis could be the ideal prosthesis to use during the rehabilitation of an impaired limb. This was, therefore, the purpose of the study.
