30pm): Workshop 2: An Introduction to Writing in English For the past 10 years, my students have taught us to think about what is called “style” in English writing. Style and the form of a sentence is where the language gets lost or where the reader gets lost. This presentation will show the importance of using the right tools in English writing to help the language become clear and to the point. We will not be covering the historical development of English style but the role of the grammarians in improving the clarity of the sentence in the twentieth century. I will be showing the use of the following tools to make the writing clear or to make the language concise and clear. First: The verb. Second: The preposition that follows the verb. Third: The pronoun. Fourth: The article (subject) Fifth: The complement (object). Finally, the sentence may be in the form “a/she did”. This is the same as the sentence in which “a” and she is used together. The examples are selected from the work of well known writers and will help the students to see the differences between the ways in which they have composed the sentences. By completing the following two tasks before class, you will be awarded a workshop registration ticket for the afternoon workshop. 1. The following word or phrase(s) of unknown meaning has to be inserted under the sentence. Use of the words or phrases that are being used is voluntary and can be changed from session to session. 1. We do not know if the car came from Spain. 2. The school was originally called 'the school for the children of the poor'.” Students should read all the sentences as they are given and then write down the word or phrase that is being added and how it is used. A short time will be given to decide which words or phrases would make the correct addition, and students will then discuss the results of their discussion. 2. The question was 'who is the writer of this poem?' Students will write out three lines of the poem and record their answers. The students need to answer yes or no to what is described in the question. In addition, students will write out the sentence that appears in the poem. These lines will be used in a discussion of the meaning of the sentence. 3. Students will write out three sentences and record their answers. The sentences must be short and as complete as possible. They will be used in a discussion on the meaning of the sentence. 4.
