[Figure l is an end view of the device of the present invention. Figure 2 is a perspective view of the apparatus of the invention. Figure 3 is a detail view of the apparatus of the invention. [Figure l is a perspective view of the device of Fig. 2. Figure 2 is a perspective view of the apparatus of Fig. 1.] Referring to the drawings, and preferably as shown in the lower figure, there is illustrated a letter opener or similar mechanism, and an apparatus for carrying it. For convenience the apparatus is indicated generally by reference numerals of the order of 1 to 4, the numbers indicating the different parts thereof. As shown, the apparatus comprises an elongated frame, which is attached to a base having a central opening into which the letter opener is inserted when the mechanism for opening and closing the letter is in position. An upper end is adapted to be turned to permit a letter to pass between the upper openings, whereby letters are partially opened and partially closed. A lower end is mounted on the frame between the opening and the lower end of a stem, which projects into the central opening in such a manner that the letter opener may be extended through it in an open position. The mechanism for opening and closing the letter opener comprises two parts, the upper part of which is adapted to slide up along the stem and the lower part of which is adapted to slide out of a hole at the lower end of the frame, thus partially closing each of the openings in such a manner that the letters are partially opened and partially closed. With this letter opener the operation of writing upon the paper is greatly improved and is much simpler than if the instrument was held vertically in the usual position. Furthermore, a variety of letter styles may be secured on the page with this arrangement and the usual use of the letter opener of the prior art is obviated. In use, the letter opener moves up and down over the stationary part of the stem and thus opens or partially opens the letter, so that one of the letters may be seen.
