Abstract: The use of “non-proportional” values for the distribution of male and female heights, and the prevalence of polygyny in rural populations, can be used as indicators of social stratification. However, this phenomenon is absent from modern societies. I tested predictions that non-proportional values should be more prevalent in rural societies, compared to modern ones, and that polygyny should be more common in rural countries. A field experiment tested both predictions; urban and rural residents from the same ethnography sample of 10,945 individuals (n = 31,844/61,963, average = 32/49) were presented with graphs of height and the likelihood that the graph would match an average height for an individual's age and sex. Across all individuals tested, height and the probability that the graph was a male vs. female match were much more similar in rural than in city settings. However, height differed significantly within both urban and rural contexts systematically: cities had a mean height greater than that of rural regions, whereas the difference between the two groups was smaller in rural settings. The results suggest that, at least in rural areas of developing countries, non-proportional values are used as an indicator of societal stratification and, potentially, cultural practices.
