Study purpose and design: The analysis of the SSS-Form V has 3 main goals: 1) To identify sub-factors that constitute the general factor structure of the SSS-Form V; 2) To identify factors that are associated with the general factor structure; 3) To analyze the SSS-Form V using the confirmatory factor analysis technique in different noncognitive-behavioral samples from both the clinical and nonclinical populations. Participants and Procedure: In both samples, the SSS-Form V was administered to 532 (2) psychiatric inpatients and in 805 (4) outpatients who had no history of psychiatric disorders. The general population samples were administered to 1056 (3) general and 3 geriatric, 521 (2) primary care, and 3 psychiatric outpatients and to 1316 (4) general and 3 geriatric, 537 (2) primary care, and 3 psychiatric inpatients (age range = 21–78 yr). Results: The SSS-Form V consists of five factor scales (SSS-Form E, F, G, H, and I), each with 10 items and a maximum score ranging from 0 to 26, plus a single, higher-order subscale (SSS-Form N) for the emotional dimension. The total score for each factor was the sum of its sub-scales. The total SSS-Form V total score ranged from 0 to 96, with higher scores indicating a weaker desire in the general population samples and greater desire in the psychiatric inpatients. For SSK-N, the higher the score the less subjective Macedonia in the Geriatric, Primary Care, and Psychiatric inpatients and the psychiatric outpatients. The SSK-Form N was also found to be associated with depression and schizoaffective disorder in both general population samples but not with psychosis among the clinical samples. Conclusions: The SSS-Form V is an objective measure of the sensation seeking tendency and is a valuable tool for the interpretation of nonpsychiatric psychiatric patient samples. The factors were found to be stable over time in both nonclinical and clinical populations. The strong correlation between the factor structure of the SSS-Form V and the general factor structure of the DSM-IV was confirmed.
