Personal life. Murphy married actress Wanda Hendrix in 1949. Their divorce became final two years later in 1951. Four days later, he married former airline stewardess Pamela Opal Lee Archer, with whom he had two sons: Terry Michael and James Shannon.
A non-smoker who rarely drank alcohol, he turned down large offers of money to advertise cigarettes and spirits. Just before his death he was offered the role of the villain in the original Dirty Harry (1971), which went to Andrew Robinson.
Audie was only 5 ft. 5 inches tall and 112 pounds when he attempted to join the Marines. But on June 30, 1942 young Audie Murphy enlisted into the U.S. Army. Little did the Army know, but this youngster from Texas was to become the most decorated soldier of World War II.
Murphy suffered from what is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder, experiencing headaches, depression and nightmares; he once said that he could sleep only with a loaded pistol under his pillow. In 1971, at the age of 46, Murphy died in the crash of a private plane near Roanoke, Virginia.
He was an accomplished poet, as well as a successful racehorse owner and breeder. Murphy was married twice, first to Wanda Hendrix from 1949 to 1951, then to Pamela Archer, with whom he had two boys, Terrance and James.
